Gold & Silver Rate History in India: Last 6 Months

Note: the 6-month history converts past USD spot prices at today's USD/INR rate and applies the import duty in force on each date. The step up in mid-May 2026 is the duty rise from 6% to 15% on 13 May 2026, not a move in world gold prices. Because the rupee has moved over the period, treat older values as a guide to the trend rather than exact historical rates.

"India rate" = live international spot price × USD/INR + 15% import duty, updated every 2 minutes. "International spot" leaves the duty out, which is useful for comparing with Dubai or Saudi prices. Neither includes 3% GST or making charges. See how a jewellery bill is calculated.

How the Gold Rate in India Is Set

India is the world's second-largest consumer of gold after China, and it imports almost all of it. That is why the Indian gold rate starts abroad. Each morning the price is built in the same order: the international price of gold in US dollars per troy ounce, converted into rupees per gram at the USD to INR rate, plus the import duty. Since 13 May 2026 that duty has been 15% (10% basic customs duty plus a 5% agriculture cess), up from 6%. The India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) and city jewellers' associations then publish the day's rates, which can sit a little above or below the landed cost depending on demand.

Two things can push the rupee price of gold up at the same time: a higher world price and a weaker rupee. Because gold is priced in dollars, a fall in the rupee lifts the Indian rate even on days when international gold doesn't move. Families who buy with money earned in the Gulf or the UK also have a second exchange rate to watch: SAR to INR, AED to INR or GBP to INR on the day the money is sent home. Our comparison of sending USD vs AED to India shows which route gets more rupees.

India vs Dubai and Pakistan

The import duty is the main reason gold costs more in India than in the Gulf. Since the duty rose to 15%, Indian 24K rates have run roughly 11–14% above Dubai's board rate, against about 5% before the change. Many families therefore buy in Dubai, but the duty-free allowance on the way home is only 40 grams of jewellery for women and 20 grams for men who have lived abroad for more than a year. We price the same 22K chain in all three markets in Dubai vs India and Pakistan gold rates, and the Dubai buying guide covers VAT and the tourist refund. Across the border, Pakistan has no fixed import duty in its daily rate; here's how the gold rate is set in Pakistan.

Gold rate vs jewellery price

The rate on this page is the price of the metal. A jewellery bill adds making charges, which are set by each jeweller and can be a percentage of the gold value, a flat amount per gram or a fixed price per piece, and then 3% GST on the total. For ready-made jewellery the 3% applies to the whole price, including making charges; 5% applies only when a jeweller makes a piece from your own gold. On a 10-gram 22K chain with 12% making charges, the bill comes to roughly 15% more than rate × weight. Our guide on how gold price is calculated in India walks through a full bill line by line.

22K, 24K and 18K gold in India

In Indian trade, gold is quoted per 10 grams: it is the unit used by MCX futures, IBJA, news reports and jewellery shops from Zaveri Bazaar in Mumbai to T. Nagar in Chennai. Per-gram and per-tola quotes are also common (1 tola = 11.6638 grams), and silver is quoted per kilogram. Most jewellery is 22K (916), which is 91.6% gold and hard-wearing enough for daily use. 24K (999) is used for coins and bars, while 18K (750) and 14K (585) are popular for lightweight, modern and diamond-set designs.

BIS hallmark and HUID

Hallmarking has been mandatory since June 2021, and since April 2023 every hallmark must include a 6-character HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification). After the March 2026 expansion the rules cover 380 districts. A valid hallmark shows the BIS logo, the purity grade (for example 22K916) and the HUID, which you can check in the official BIS Care app before paying. Old unhallmarked jewellery can still be sold or exchanged, but expect it to be tested and valued on its actual purity.

Ways to buy gold in India

Jewellery remains the first choice for weddings and festivals such as Dhanteras and Akshaya Tritiya, but making charges are money you don't get back when you sell. Coins and bars carry much lower making charges, and gold ETFs and gold mutual funds carry none. The government has not issued new Sovereign Gold Bonds since February 2024; existing bonds still trade on the stock exchanges.
