Is Gold Cheaper in Dubai? Dubai Gold Rate vs India and Pakistan, and How Much Gold You Can Bring Home

golddubaiindiapakistan
Is gold cheaper in Dubai? We compare the Dubai gold rate with India and Pakistan on a real 22K chain, plus how much gold you can bring home.

Ask almost any family in India or Pakistan with a relative working in the Gulf, and you'll hear the same advice: "Buy the gold in Dubai, it's cheaper." Sometimes that's true. Sometimes it's an expensive myth. And sometimes the saving at the Gold Souk disappears at the customs desk back home.

This guide puts the Dubai gold rate side by side with the gold rate in India and Pakistan on the same day, prices the same piece of jewellery in all three markets, and then explains how much gold you can actually bring home without paying duty. All figures are from 21 October 2026.

💡 Quick answer: For Indians, gold in Dubai is usually about 13–15% cheaper per gram, mainly because India adds a 15% import duty. For Pakistanis, the gold rate itself is almost the same in Dubai and Karachi, so any saving comes from lower making charges or the tourist VAT refund. In both cases, the duty-free customs allowance limits how much of that saving you can bring home.

Dubai Gold Rate vs India and Pakistan: Today's Numbers

All three markets start from the same place: the world gold price in US dollars per ounce. What changes is what each country adds on top. Here are the published rates for 21 October 2026, converted at that day's exchange rates (about ₹25.74 and Rs 75.36 per dirham):

Market24K per gram22K per gramSame 22K gram in AED
🇦🇪 Dubai (board rate)AED 497.25AED 460.50AED 460.50
🇮🇳 India (bullion rate)₹14,657₹13,436about AED 522
🇵🇰 Pakistan (Sarafa rate)Rs 37,254Rs 34,151about AED 453

Put another way:

  • India vs Dubai: the Indian 24K rate was about 14.5% higher than Dubai's, and 22K about 13.3% higher.
  • Pakistan vs Dubai: the Pakistani rates were actually about 0.6–1.6% lower than Dubai's board rates that day. Within normal daily swings, the two are effectively level.

Why Gold Is Cheaper in Dubai Than in India

The short answer is tax. Dubai's gold rate is simply the world price converted into dirhams at the fixed rate of 3.6725 per dollar, plus a small dealer premium (we explain why the dirham is pegged in a separate guide). India's rate is the world price converted into rupees plus a 15% import duty, raised from 6% in May 2026. That one tax accounts for almost the entire gap.

India then adds 3% GST to the jewellery bill. The UAE charges 5% VAT, but visitors can reclaim most of it. Our guide on how gold price is calculated in India walks through every layer of an Indian bill.

Why Dubai Isn't Much Cheaper Than Pakistan

This surprises many people. Pakistan's gold rate, set daily by the All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association, is also the world price converted into rupees plus a local premium, which recently has been around 1–2%. Dubai's board rate carries a similar premium of its own. So on most days the two rates sit within a percent or two of each other.

Where Dubai can still win for Pakistani buyers is everything around the rate: making charges in the Gold Souk are fiercely competitive, prices are clearly displayed, and every shop works from the same official board. Our guide to how the gold rate is set in Pakistan explains the Sarafa premium, making charges and kaat in detail.

The Same 20-Gram 22K Chain in Three Countries

Rates per gram only tell part of the story, because taxes and making charges are added on top. To compare like with like, here is the same 20-gram 22K chain priced in each market with an identical 8% making charge:

🇦🇪 Dubai🇮🇳 India🇵🇰 Pakistan (Tier-1 jeweller)
Gold value (20 g of 22K)AED 9,210.00₹2,68,712Rs 683,022
Making charges (8%)AED 736.80₹21,497Rs 54,642
Tax5% VAT: AED 497.343% GST: ₹8,7063% sales tax: Rs 22,130
Total at the tillAED 10,444.14₹2,98,915Rs 759,794
Tourist VAT refund (87% of VAT, minus AED 4.80 fee)− AED 427.89n/an/a
Dubai price for a visitorAED 10,016.25

Now convert the Dubai prices into rupees:

Who is buying in DubaiIn Indian rupeesvs buying in IndiaIn Pakistani rupeesvs buying in Pakistan
A visitor who claims the VAT refund₹2,57,848✅ about ₹41,000 cheaper (14%)Rs 754,825≈ about Rs 5,000 cheaper (0.7%)
A UAE resident (no VAT refund)₹2,68,863✅ about ₹30,000 cheaper (10%)Rs 787,070❌ about Rs 27,000 dearer (3.6%)

🔍 Two things stand out. For Indian buyers, Dubai is clearly cheaper whether you live there or not. For Pakistani buyers, Dubai only comes out ahead if the making charge is lower than at home or if you're a visitor claiming the VAT refund. If a Dubai jeweller charged 5% making instead of 8%, a visitor's chain would cost about Rs 733,900, roughly 3.4% less than the Pakistani price. That's why haggling over the making charge matters more than which city you buy in.

⚠️ Most Gulf expats can't claim the VAT refund. The UAE's tourist refund scheme is only for visitors who are not UAE residents. If you live and work in the UAE, you pay the full 5% VAT, which is already reflected in the "UAE resident" row above.

How Much Gold Can You Bring Home Duty-Free?

This is where many Dubai bargains come undone. Both India and Pakistan limit how much jewellery a passenger can bring in without paying duty, and the limits are small.

Bringing gold from Dubai to India

Under India's Baggage Rules, 2026, in force since 2 February 2026:

  • Women can bring up to 40 grams of jewellery duty-free.
  • Men and other passengers can bring up to 20 grams.
  • The allowance only applies to Indian residents and people of Indian origin who have lived abroad for more than one year. The old value caps (₹50,000 and ₹1 lakh) have been removed, so only the weight counts.
  • If you've been away for less than a year, there's no separate jewellery allowance. Jewellery counts towards the general duty-free allowance of ₹75,000, which a single 20-gram 22K chain easily exceeds.
  • Gold above the allowance, and gold coins or bars, must be declared at the Red Channel, and customs duty is charged on it. Keep your invoices.

So the 20-gram chain in our example fits exactly within a man's allowance, and a woman could bring two similar pieces. Anything more, and the duty charged on the excess quickly eats the saving, because the saving was mostly India's import duty in the first place.

Bringing gold from Dubai to Pakistan

Pakistan's allowance is smaller and less clearly published. Duty-free jewellery for passengers is commonly reported at around 10 grams, and customs officers have discretion in how they apply it. Gold bars and coins are dutiable from the first gram. Anything above the allowance is charged duty and tax on arrival.

Given how close the Dubai and Pakistani rates are, it rarely makes financial sense to pay duty on extra gold carried from Dubai to Pakistan. Check the current rules with Pakistan Customs (FBR) before you travel, declare what you carry, and keep the original invoice with the weight and karat printed on it.

Leaving the UAE

On the way out, the UAE requires travellers to declare cash and valuables, including gold and jewellery, if their combined value is AED 60,000 or more. A single chain won't come close, but a wedding set might.

What About Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Arabia's gold rate tracks the world price at the riyal's fixed 3.75 per dollar, so the underlying rate is almost identical to Dubai's. The big difference is VAT: Saudi Arabia charges 15% on jewellery, including making charges, against 5% in the UAE. On the same piece, that alone makes Dubai noticeably cheaper.

For Indian buyers, Saudi jewellery ends up roughly level with Indian prices, or slightly cheaper, because 15% VAT is close to India's 15% duty plus 3% GST. For Pakistani buyers it usually costs more than buying at home. Compare live rates on our gold rate in Saudi Arabia page, and read our guide to buying gold in Saudi Arabia, where 21K is the local standard.

Is It Better to Send Money Home Instead?

Sometimes, yes. If you're working in the Gulf and the main goal is to buy gold for family back home, compare two options:

  1. Buy in Dubai and carry it home, within the duty-free allowance.
  2. Send the money home and buy locally.

For India, option 1 usually wins for amounts within the allowance, thanks to the duty gap. For Pakistan, option 2 is often just as good and avoids the customs risk. A good transfer rate matters either way: check AED to INR, AED to PKR, SAR to INR or SAR to PKR before you send. Our guides on sending USD or AED to India and the USD to PKR expat guide cover how to get the best rate.

Tips Before You Buy Gold in Dubai

  • Check all three rates on the day. Gold moves every few minutes, and the gap between Dubai and home can change with the rupee.
  • Negotiate the making charge, not the gold rate. Every shop in the Gold Souk uses the same board rate, so the making charge is where the saving is.
  • Ask for an itemised invoice showing weight, karat, the gold rate used, making charges and VAT. You'll need it for the VAT refund, for customs at home, and to sell the piece later.
  • Look for the purity stamp: 916 for 22K, 875 for 21K, 750 for 18K. Our gold karats guide explains each one.
  • Stay within your allowance, or work out the duty on the excess before you buy.
  • If you're buying to invest, consider bars or coins. Investment-grade gold is VAT-free in the UAE, and our guides on how to invest in gold and gold ETFs vs physical gold compare the options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gold cheaper in Dubai than in India?

Yes, usually by about 13–15% per gram, mainly because India adds a 15% import duty that the UAE doesn't. On 21 October 2026, 24K gold cost AED 497.25 per gram in Dubai, about ₹12,800, against ₹14,657 in India.

Is gold cheaper in Dubai than in Pakistan?

Not by much. Pakistan's Sarafa rate and Dubai's board rate are usually within one or two percent of each other. Dubai can still work out cheaper if the making charge is lower or if you're a visitor claiming the VAT refund.

How much gold can I bring from Dubai to India without paying duty?

Under the Baggage Rules, 2026, a passenger who has lived abroad for more than one year can bring up to 40 grams of jewellery (women) or 20 grams (men) duty-free. There's no value cap any more. Coins, bars and anything above the limit must be declared and are charged duty.

How much gold can I bring from Dubai to Pakistan?

Pakistan's duty-free jewellery allowance is commonly reported at around 10 grams per passenger, applied at the customs officer's discretion. Bars and coins are dutiable. Check the current rules with Pakistan Customs before you travel.

Can UAE residents get the VAT back on gold?

No. The UAE tourist refund scheme is only for visitors who aren't UAE residents. Residents pay the full 5% VAT on jewellery.

Why is the 22K gold rate in Dubai higher than 22/24 of the 24K rate?

Dubai's official board sets each karat's rate separately, and the 22K rate has typically been around 92.6% of the 24K rate rather than the 91.7% pure-gold ratio. India and Pakistan usually price 22K at close to 91.7% of 24K. It's a small difference, but it's one reason the per-gram gap with Pakistan can vary by karat.

Do I have to declare gold when leaving the UAE?

Only if the combined value of the cash and valuables you're carrying, including gold and jewellery, is AED 60,000 or more.

Final Thoughts

"Buy it in Dubai" is good advice for Indian families, as long as the gold fits within the duty-free allowance. For Pakistani families, the rate is so close to home that the real savings come from a sharper making charge, the tourist VAT refund, and the reassurance of buying in a transparent market. In every case, check the day's rates in all three markets before you buy, and know your customs limit before you fly.
